Monday night madness

Thought I would do a short post and offer some thoughts pertaining to the Monday night football game between the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts. I don't focus entirely on football for most of my postings, but this was an incredible game that was very intriguing and entertaining to watch. Plus, I am a football coach and breaking down games is pure joy for me. Here are my observations:

1. The Wildcat offensive package is gaining in popularity and the NFL is a league of copycats, so we will continue to see more of this scheme as time goes on. NFL defenses don't know how to defend the option and this offense creates problems and mismatches for defenses trying to defend all the nuances of this particular scheme. The only thing that will slow its emergence is the fact that many head coaches and offensive coordinators are quick to label it as a "gimmick "or" fad" offense. Aside from this, most people in general subscribe to their own formula for success and are slow to adopt ideas that they don't fully understand or didn't have the knowledge to come up with themselves. Despite this fact, nobody wants to look stupid or out of touch with recognizable results. Therefore, more converts will come out of the closet and adopt the Wildcat as it produces more on the field results and gains more steam and appeal as a "legitimate" offensive package.

2. This just in--- The Manning brothers are really good. Both QB's directed 4th quarter comebacks for their respective teams this past weekend and they demonstrated how good they can be under pressure. Peyton is so intelligent and looks like he could run the no huddle offense in his sleep. He still has his reliable targets like Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne, but there are also several new rookies and young players in the mix for the Colts. You can't let him have the ball last in a one possession game with time on the clock. If you do, you are going to lose most of the time.

3. This just in--- Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are really good too. They may not get as many headlines as the guys scoring points, but these defensive ends are real difference makers too. Freeney gave the big tackle for the Dolphins major fits even as he drew double teams most of the night. Mathis got to Pennington late in the game and forced a fumble. Freeney is so explosive and has an amazing ability to get great leverage vs. pass blockers.

4. The Dolphins had a great game plan, but they still lost the game. They possessed the ball for basically 3 out of 4 quarters, converted most of their 3rd down attempts, controlled the line of scrimmage, but still came up short. In my opinion, they settled for field goal attempts on too many occasions and they couldn't stop the Colts passing attack when it mattered most. This game perfectly illustrates the fact that statistics don't always tell the whole story of a football game.

5. Dan Henning called a good game and mixed things up well, but what was he thinking during the last 3 minutes of the game. The Dolphins offensive coordinator called plays as if the Dolphins had 7 minutes left on the clock, 2 or 3 timeouts remaining and good field position. The reality was that the Dolphins had 3 minutes remaining in the game, 1 timeout left, and 83 yards to go for a touchdown. The Dolphins showed no sense of urgency but rather a complete lack of preparation down the stretch. This is understandable at certain levels of football, but certainly not the NFL. The Dolphins need to practice their 4 minute offense because their play calling and game management was atrocious.

Just a few more thoughts and then I will shut up.

--- Somebody should get Lane Kiffin a muzzle. The head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers is still directing negative comments towards Urban Meyer. Five years from now, Urban Meyer will probably have at least another 2 National Championships to his credit and Lane Kiffin probably won't even be coaching at Tennessee anymore. Monte Kiffin is a great coach, but I'm not sure why ol' Lane is speaking out so much. I probably will never reach the level of coaching that Lane Kiffin has, but I think he should produce more results on the field before he verbally attacks any other programs. Shame on Tennessee too for going after an unproven coach. Why not pursue a guy like Terry Bowden or Turner Gill?

---I predict that Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan will be back in the league coaching again next year. Cowher is too competitive to stay away much longer and his stock will start to drop if he stays on the sidelines too long. Shanahan is an innovative offensive mind and I wouldn't be surprised if Redskins owner Daniel Snyder comes a calling at seasons end. The Redskins offense is very unimaginative, listless, and I believe they are looking at 7-9 this season.

---Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints may be the dark horse of the NFC this season. They have a high octane offense led by one of the top 5 or 6 QB's in the league.

---Best 0-2 team in the league is the Titans
---Worst 2-0 team in the league is the Broncos
---It looks as if the Lions and Rams will be battling again next year to see who has the number 1 pick in the draft
---The Vikings will win their division this year, but falter in the playoffs.
---Jacksonville's window has closed and I believe Del Rio will be out as coach of the Jags.
---My upset special of the upcoming week: The Jets will have a letdown after upsetting the Patriots and they will lose at home to a desperate Tennessee Titans squad.

Lights out.

I agree with most of your comments from the game last night! Indeed it was a very fun game to watch!

Felt nice not to think about your own teams struggles and just watch MNF with few interruptions!

You've been calling the Cowher to Carolina for a while now! I think your right for 2010!

Seriously St. Louis and Washington have crapppppppppppy offense.

The Lions are going to pull out of it, by that I mean they'll win 3 games!... err... maybe!

I don't care now though... Brett sealed the deal for me... I'm converted to purple. You know I hate bandwagon fans, but wow, they're going to be great. There defense is going to be better and better each week.

Speaking of teams... how about the Steel Curtain? Should be more like the silk curtain on Sunday! You guys guys miss Troy Polamalu. I don't think your going to see a repeat, although it is a long season!

Mikey said...

haha "silk curtain" good stuff. ya know coach it's bout time you just sell out to a quality establishment like the Colts! Hess it's time for you to come home too...esp since the eagles are getting flushed down the toilet this season.

moss the eagles are fine...back off...last time i checked the previous super champs lost more than one game during the season. we are fine, vick is back, i just hope this week is not a "bring your pet to the game" week. if so, vick might be a little side tracked...shanahan to the cowboys next season if they do not make the playoffs, cowher to the panthers or jags next season...

Brandon,

I agree the Steelers do really miss Polamalu. He may not be back for another month or so too. In any case, I picked the Steelers to go to the playoffs again this year, but I don't necessarily see them repeating. Baltimore looks solid and they actually have an offense now to go along with an always tough defense. I think our FG kicker probably cost us the game against the Bears. He had 2 misses and one of them was a chipshot. That is unusual for him. Anyway, I will start to worry if we lose to the Bengals this weekend.

Mikey,

I do have some love for the Colts. I think Peyton is tremendous and the Irsays have said that they are modeling their franchise after the Steelers. You have to know that I am impressed with that statement! I like this team too because of the Dungy influence and the way they go about their business. For sure, the Colts would not participate in the antics of a certain coach with the initials B.B. who coaches a team somewhere up in Massachusetts. Go Razorbacks!

Dusty,

Shanahan to the Cowboys would be interesting. I could see that one too. The Jags might indeed make a push for Cowher too. Maybe, one of these coaches could coach an expansion team if the NFL starts a team in a new city. How about the Portland Jailbreakers? The team could then sign Michael Vick and have Plaxico Burress and Randy Moss at receiver. Terrell Owens could be the 3rd receiver, so we could listen to him complain about not getting the ball enough. Adam Pac Man Jones could start in the secondary and Ray Lewis could play linebacker. The rest of the roster could be filled out by whatever Cincinnati Bengals happen to be out of jail at that particular time. What do you think?

I do like the Ravens. I don't know about Flacco though. He does have a cannon... much like Dusty Hess... well maybe not that good, but the dude can sure sling it. It's some of his other weaknesses that I'm not to fond of. Did you see Ray Lewis end their game against the Chargers last week? WOW. Ok so here is my call of the week... The Lions break back into the win column for the first time since 2007 this week against Washington! And I'm not so sure about Petrino down their for the Razorbacks... shoot he could be Bill's brother the way he split on the Falcons... dude is a dirtball! Or is that why they hired him!!!!

Brandon, Forget football, when are you going to write a post on your own blog about the collapse of the Tigers, for the second time in four years? Twins will sweep this week.

It'll be a long winter. Too bad Detroit doesn't have an NFL team to make the time go faster.

BStrong said...

Shawn-

That's brutal! The Tig's haven't collapsed yet! There's still that four game series where you guys get out from under that big pillow and play a real game! By the way... change the comments portion so I can actually respond to a blog or to on yours!

Also... don't forget that I said that the Twins will be there in the end... but the Tigers will pull through!

ok ok, First off
B-Strong - Congrats on the lions beating an imploding washington redskins... Petrino leaving Atlanta... are you kidding me? no one in their right mind would have stayed in that mess. Esp if they had the opportunity to land a job in the SEC, heck he would have done it for Vandy... btw I’m happy for ya, Michigan managed to pull the big W in that shoot out with Indiana… Indiana prolly could have made it happen if they could’ve eliminated some of their walks and missed free throws…. Haha but in all sincerity I hope things are going good for you and your family.

Shawn – But detriot does have a team to make things go faster… it’s always nice to be done by New Year’s… ha How have you been? Hope writing is going good for you.

Coach, sorry for using your blog as a message board…haha

Guess I spoke too soon on the Lions. Schwartz for Mayor.

Although, right now I might take the Lions over the Steelers, right Eric? That could change.

Anyone can comment on my blog, anonymous or any other account. It pops up below instead of separate. If my computer illiterate parents can figure it out, a teacher should certainly be able to.

I see the Twins taking 3 of four in Detroit, then it comes down to the last weekend.

BStrong said...

Mikey- Yeah your right on the Falcons!

Fury- good night!! I've tried to comment on there about a billion times and the stupid thing doesn't work! I think it's cause I use Mozilla as a web browser! I hit "post" 2000 times and get nothing!
Tiger's are going for the sweep. And I have a book idea for you... it'll be clear in a few weeks!

BStrong said...

Affirmative on the web browser... come on catch up with the times! Nobody uses Internet Explorer anymore!

Good grief you probably write your books on typewriter to!

Um... go local sports team!

Shawn,

The Steelers are worrying me. I am hoping the Browns come to the Burg soon. We need to feel good about ourselves ASAP and the Browns would definitely serve that purpose. Also, I am enjoying the back and forth between you and Brandon.

Eric Slivoskey said...

Mikey,

The foil curtain will rebound and become tough again. Ben has to quit throwing those picks though. We aren't giving up many points, but we are losing close games and I think we are feeling the loss of the best defensive player in football. We need Troy to come back soon!

I have one thing to say BOB SANDERS! boo on troy haha but sadly they are both hurt... it's killin me.

BStrong said...

Wow... well maybe Ben should quit thinking about the ladies in the crowd and get his head in the game! Err... wait... how did that story end up again!

Fury... please back and forth with a Twinky? That's like a back and forth with my wife... and I don't need to let you know how that turns out! (Ok so usually it's me soaking the pillow with tears!)

Shawn... let's look at it like this... the Twins... well they just don't have what it takes to make that historic comeback and in the end the Tigers built just enough cushion to protect the lead!

Eric Slivoskey said...

Don't know why Brandon and Shawn are going back and forth about the Twins and Tigers. The best team in baseball is in fact the Pirates. After all, they set all kinds of different records this year! In truth, everything went down hill when Jim Leyland left the team. Kind of funny, I was looking through some old newspapers when I was working in the garage yesterday. The one USA Today sports section I came across dated back to 1992. It was an August edition and it showed the Pirates in first place in their division. I almost took a picture of it!

Eric Slivoskey said...

Mikey,

I agree with you that Bob Sanders is a comparable player to Troy. I am probably a little biased, but it is a bit like comparing Eli and Peyton. Eli is great in his own way, but Peyton is in a league all by himself. ha ha

Mikey said...

haha good comparison

BStrong said...

I think you meant to say that "The best stadium in baseball is in fact the Pirates facility" Did they win 60 games this year? Wow! Don't they hold some new major league record??? hahaha
